Dine with James Dean and the Rat Pack

If you have a hearty appetite and a big group of people who can’t quite agree on where to go or what kind of food they want for dinner, take them all down to Danny Boy’s. The menu is long enough to almost be confusing, and they offer everything from pasta and salads to ribs, pizza, enormous 12-inch subs and more.
The restaurant’s location on U.S. 250 makes it a good bet for the tourist trade, so the place is usually packed. Be prepared to wait to be seated, and once you’ve got a table, don’t be surprised if it takes a while to put in your order. Service is friendly and capable, but not the quickest in the land.
While you wait, though, you can enjoy the retro ’50’s kitsch décor: framed photographs of Rat Pack legends Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. A six-foot tall cardboard cutout of James Dean in full Rebel Without a Cause regalia points the way from to the secondary, larger dining room. There are ample tv monitors playing your favorite sports in the bar seating area, and Danny Boys’ is a pretty great place to watch the game.
First impression of the food? There’s so much of it! One guest likened the plate to a trough. Every meal starts with their homemade garlic bread, buttery and warm from the oven, and a green salad. Once you fill up on that, you might not be prepared to do justice to the enormous plate of Perfectly Frank Fettucini ($17.95), wide flat pasta with shrimp, Italian sausage, fresh spinach and sweet red peppers tossed in a rosemary cream sauce. Or the enormous rack of smoky sweet barbecue ribs ($15.95), tender and almost falling off the bone. My favorite, though, are the Polish Pierogies ($13.95), pillowy pockets of smooth potato and cheese, lightly sauteed with peppers and onions, and served with cool sour cream to cut the richness. Very delicious, both for dinner at the restaurant, and for lunch the next day!
I couldn’t tell you a thing about the desserts; I’d be amazed if anyone ever has room left to order them after a meal at Danny Boy’s.
